I loved this book. I bought it as soon as I saw the title and author, and I did so because The Ashes of London was so good. The year is 1666, and fire has destroyed about half of London, England. Because of property disputes following the fire, the Fire Court has been established by the King to facilitate rebuilding the city. Enter the two principle characters, James Marwood and Catherine Lovett, both returning after the Ashes of London.The interests of these two characters entwine when of woman of social standing is found murdered in a burned out house. It's obvious the body has been brought there from somewhere else. Oddly, it is Marwood's father who is the sole witness to the murder, but is generally ignored because of his worsening dementia. James Marwood gradually comes to believe that his father's ravings hold the key to the mystery.It's a convention of modern novels that a romance is de rigeur at some point. Author Andrew Taylor deftly avoids this by keeping James and Catherine at arm's length, while acknowledging their attraction to each other. We haven't seen the last of these two highly individual and resourceful characters. You don't have to read the Ashes of London first, but you'll enjoy The Fire Court a lot more if you do.Was it a good read? Well, I dropped three other novels I was reading and plunged into The Fire Court, finishing it in a couple of days. Were I not retired, I might have called in sick to get to the end. Buy it.

This was an interesting look at a darker side of English history.
he Fire Court’ is a beautifully descriptive historical mystery set the year after the Great Fire of London. The writing was immersive and the period so well researched that I felt as if I was there. James Marwood finds himself investigating after his father claims to have found a dead woman at the chambers of the lawyers dealing with the aftermath of the Great Fire. He teams up with Cat Lovett, an interestingly independent woman for her time. I loved reading about the machinations of those in positions of power, as well as the ordinary lives of the people. The little details really brought this story alive for me. As a lover of historical novels, this book hit all the right notes for me. The story was fascinating, with plenty of twists and turns and the author’s ability to make the past seem real was such a joy. I really enjoyed it.I was given a review copy by LoveReading.
