A really smart look at what it takes for democracy to work. It's messy, it's hard, but it's the most important fight. Condi Rice draws on American history and our own institutional struggles with freedom and democracy as well as case studies from her own career in government -- Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Kenya, Columbia, and of course the Middle East with a focus on Iraq. The book also talks about the 2016 election, and points forward optimistically about America's role in the world and how we must remain vigilant about our own democratic institutions. This is a great primer and perfectly timed for the challenges we face in the world!
I have given other books 5 stars, but this was a paradigm shifting book. I knew Ms. Rice was very intelligent and part of several historical events, but I had no idea. Her intimate connection with events surrounding the Soviet Union, her expertise (she has a PhD in Soviet studies), as well as her knowledge of other areas and democracy give an amazing view of the complexity and murkiness but importance of democracy and democratic institutions. THIS book is highly recommended for an understanding of democracy and the struggles of other developing democracies.
A TRUE TEXTBOOK on Democracy. Rice writes with the clarity of a true diplomat. Her knowledge of global sociology and Russian history is commanding. This book can easily be found on a graduate level syllabus. Bravo to the author. She truly writes with experience and forthright judgment of world events.
Amazing summary of key elements to understand what makes US democracy so outstanding.Written with plenty of factual rigor but down to earth to make it an easy read.Brilliantly explained. Great comparison to understand what works and what doesn'tMakes you value the struggle of so many people throughout history to achieve such stable democracy, so as not let ourselves relax to the point of loosing it, because everybody counts in the process of keeping it healthy.
Dr Rice does an excellent job of marrying her personal journey with her witnessing of our larger global journey. Her insights into human nature and into the workings of groups of people should be taken to heart. All human institutions and indeed all people are imperfect. Dr Rices book helps restore faith that - while we are inherently imperfect - we can still strive to make the world a better place and indeed have made progress over the years.
First off I have to say that I am an admirer of Condi Rice, her service, her intellect and her writing abilities and although I do not give this book a five star I enjoyed it very much. There are just too many 5s out there in Amazon world for ordinary authors and books. I thoroughly enjoyed her family background book and also No Higher Honor about her time in government service. In this tome she takes larger snapshots of how democracies have succeeded and failed around the world and succeeds in her commentary. A good education for those who haven't completedPoliSci
This book provides a much needed perspective on why democracy works and why it does not. Democracy is still the best hope for a world troubled by terror, immorality and corruption.
Well written and in depth. You will finish it before you realize. Dr. Rice is a writer that takes you on a journey of interest and intrigue. My third book written her.
