May you grow up to be righteous,/ May you grow up to be true finds the hero fist-bumping an African-American school chum; May you have a strong foundation/ When the winds of changes shift captures him on the front lines of a peace demonstration. Rogers's line drawings may surprise admirers of his Jazz ABZ: the chilly rendering style and the flat, digitally manipulated compositions recall 1960s low-budget animation. The key to this book's likeliest audience, however, rests in the many visual shout-outs to Dylan's career (they're all explained in an endnote). DA Pennebaker can be seen filming the peace march, while Edie Sedgwick, Joan Baez and other hipster icons are among the marchers; another spread depicts the Greenwich Village clubs where Dylan played in the 1960s, and throws in references to both Lay, Lady, Lay (a big brass bed glimpsed through a window) and the cover of the 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Kindergarten-Grade 4—Rogers has fashioned Dylan's 1973 song into an homage to the musician and to coming of age in the 1960s. Adults familiar with the songwriter's life and albums will recognize images in the artwork that recall the period. For those who miss these references, a page-by-page explanation of the visual clues is appended. Most children will feel that the text reads like a blessing spoken by an adult to a growing boy. The illustrations show a street musician giving his guitar to a Caucasian child. He learns to play it and becomes friends with an African-American boy. The two eventually form their own street band, travel the country in a VW bug, and participate in rallies to save the planet and stop the war. The story comes full circle as the young man passes his guitar on to a girl at song's end. Some of the images will be confusing to those who don't read the back matter; e.g., the sticker on the guitar case that reads, "This machine kills Fascists" is a Woody Guthrie reference. I LOVE this song! Just the sweetest lyrics to give to a newborn baby as a gift. However, I hate the illustrations, I was actually aware of this before I bought the book and I have passed over it as a baby shower gift before because of the illustrations. I'm a liberal hippie at heart but I didn't want this book to contain any political message (even ones I agree with). The illustrations center around the issues of the 60's, like the Vietnam War and focuses on Dylan himself- I don't want to buy this book for my parents, I want to buy it for kids. The lyrics are so beautiful, just illustrate those! This book should be read by cuddling up to mom and dad. I would still recommend the book just beware of the imagery.
Love this song- love this book! My kids (& my husband & I) enjoy reading this book together. The pics are great & we love the little surprise references like the school bus is from "the finest school all right". Can't go wrong here & it's like a little blessing & encouagement to read or sing to your little ones!
Bought this as a gift for a 5 year old who loves Dylan. Great for parent-child reading. Goes well with Robbie Robertson's "Hiawatha" and "Legends, Icons and Rebels: Music that changed the world." I've written reviews on both. Great for getting kids interested in reading, story-telling and music.

He also says that if we listen to Dylan's music, we will discover more information creatively tucked away into each page. This allows for discovery and learning (for a bit older child). How marvelous, lovely and fun!It's a beautiful book and if you get a chance, listen to Dylan's song. It's gracefully sung. The only wish I have is that there be a version of this book that includes the Dylan CD from which this song comes from.There is a wonderful short video out as well (check amazon or youtube) that promotes the sale of this book. It would be awesome to see a full video or a video of more songs like this. I hope the publisher and author/illustrator consider this for a future project!You wont be disappointed in this book.
For several years I have given families in my family a special Christmas book. At first it was books like the Littlest Angel. As the years went by I saw Its a Wonderful World as the perfect gift since that song was special to our family. This year Forever Young expressed our wishes for the family. Bob Dylan won the Noble Peace Prize for Literature, adding another bit of interest to the book choice.
Amazing illustrations! Perfect gift for a Bob Dylan lover or their child. Super special to keep as a keepsake book (not a let your child thrash book). My friend's baby girl is named Dylan after Bob Dylan and she cried when I got her this!
Love this book, first saw at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame! Glad to find on Amazon. Excellent illustrations and, of course, with Bob Dylan's words. Extra plus was a description of all the pictures in the back of the book.
Love the lyrics. Great illustrations. I like the explanations of the scenes in the back of the book. The recurring red VW is my grandson's favorite part.
