This small electronic book was just what I needed! The author has clearly explained the underlying object model and programming techniques, so that anyone, new to coding, or experienced with other languages, can get started using LiveCode.Actually, I used HyperCard extensively decades ago. So the basic concepts and coding syntax were totally familiar, but there are important changes and powerful additions in LiveCode. The IDE is substantially different. And I had a hard time finding well-organized documentation. Much that I found was fragmentary and/or written for older versions.Goldberg's book pulls the core material together in a thoughtful, well-written text, so I strongly recommend this for anyone learning to use LiveCode, whatever his background. If we're lucky he'll write a second volume going deeper into accessing serious data, math and graphical operations, using the Script Editor (debugging), evolving complexities of creating standalone apps for mobile and other OS's ...Still, it's clearly a work in progress. There are some bothersome editing oversights, (spelling, missing words, and spaces between words, text contradicting itself, etc.) -- definitely could benefit from more careful proofreading / editing. And text layout (tricky, I know, in Kindle format) is awkward in places -- missing paragraph breaks, inconsistent use of headers and section names .... But even a picky reader like myself appreciates the effort and knowledge that went into this book.
This is the book that should accompany LiveCode when the software is purchased! It is a jewel for beginners or those of us who are less talented at coding. The author knows how to write and also how to educate. That is a rare thing in the technical jungle. He uses understandable vocabulary for the beginner. LiveCode is an amazing piece of software. The creators are gifted in the field of code. However, they aren't the best at writing for the "lay person". This is the book to have. It explains the basic scripting process in an understandable way. Not only that, Stephen Goldberg has made it affordable for all of us. A big "hat tip" to him for that. My only wish is that he would write more manuals/books regarding LiveCode development: Advanced LiveCode Development, Android Development, and iOS Development are among titles that I'd LOVE to see.Thank you Stephen Goldberg for an up to date and readable LiveCode Beginners Book.
I found this book and was a little skeptical in terms that it was so cheap in comparison to some others on offer.I was surprised. For someone just wanting to get the feel of LiveCode and just getting in and getting one's hands dirty, this is the book. Well written and easy to follow. After going through the book and some of the exercises I now feel sufficiently familiar with LiveCode to start exploring and starting some useful projects on my own.For starting out and at such a low price one can't go wrong buying this book.
This is a great book for beginners or refreshers. Walks you through scripting. I've used the product before and it gave me a number of "oh yeah, I remember this" moments.
I've used Goldberg's introduction to using LiveCode in my teaching at the University of Chicago, and have found it very helpful for beginning students that do not already know their way around computing and computing documentation. The LiveCode framework is quite good for getting an "object like" programming experience in a "drag and drop" user interface. LiveCode Lite pulls together much of what is needed to get past all the learning curve for beginners.
