From Library Journal
In this comprehensive guidebook for whitewater river runners, the authors (California Whitewater, North Fork Pr., 1994, 3d ed.), plan outings in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, Texas, California, Oregon, and Washington. The description of each river includes information on discharge, flow, hazards, season, permits, managing agency addresses and phone numbers, commercial trip availability, side excursions, maps, put-in and take-out, and a mile-by-mile description of each trip with photos where appropriate. Combining useful and accurate information on whitewater in 11 Western states and an easy-to-read, logical format, this book is as much a reference book as a guidebook. Highly recommended.Thomas K. The Bible for running whitewater in the West. No contest.
Great book for our collection. Will refer to it often as we plan and execute river trips in the West
it would be awesome to have an updated version of this, but even out of date and out of print, its the best guide I have run across
This book is excellent, when I first got started into the sport the research and info. in the book was invaluable. I still go back after many runs re-read and learn from the great resource, a must have on your shelf if you like to run the rivers in the west!
I bought this for a friend who is an avid outdoors kind of guy and white water is one of his thrills. He was very pleased with his Christmas gift.
I had this book for the first 20 years I rafted the west. Lost it somewhere I have no idea so I recently re-acquired it all over 10 years later to discover it is still very relevant and the most comprehensive guide to the west and the runnable whitewater that lies in this territory. This book never saw the bookshelf. It was constantly on my nearest table for planning the next river adventure. Invaluable reference guide and dream book.
This is a big book, 590 pages, that is just packed with useful information. Most of the book is devoted to matter-of-fact information that one would expect, such as how to get to the put-in, and what the notable rapids in that section of river are rated. It also has a running commentary on river use controversies, from the conservationists' point of view naturally, that I found fascinating. The strength of this book is that every notable recreational river west of the Mississippi is inside; given the amount of space available to describe each river, the coverage is excellent. The weakness of this book is mainly that it is not the definitive guide to any river. It doesn't try to be; that wouldn't be practical. It does point out the books that are definitive (as of 1994). The book dates to 1994, and I certainly hope that another edition is in the works. Other than sixteen gorgeous pages of color plates in the center of the book, the book is black and white. I wished in particular that the river diagrams were in color, as they seem a bit lacking.Anyone who wonders how the rivers he or she knows personally compare to any other river worth paddling in the Western US will find this book indispensable.
