Anyone who has seen the documentary "Into Great Silence" will enjoy this book, too. The movie introduced me to the Carthusians and I have subsequently read a number of books by or about them. This is written by a priest as a journal - or rather letters - to his acquaintances. I enjoyed it. I wish he had more entries on the way they celebrate Mass and more about their contemplative lifestyle. Other than that I recommend the book and the photographs are very cool!
I liked every page of this book. The author described men who are truly extraordinarily ordinary, men of solitude who are seeking to encounter God in silence and are united with Jesus in His solitude in the desert. I would recommend this book to any souls who are drawn (aspire) to encounter God in solitude & silence.
A real glimpse in the life of the Carthusian Monks. It is good to know that there is such a place - where they accept outsiders, to just quiet yourself and your mind. To all people who are searching for peace and silence, get this book.
An easy read and very personable report of time spent at one of the oldest Charterhouses in Europe, about what one would expect out of a series of letters to family and friends. Particularly enjoyable are the many photos that accompany the text. The author chose to remain anonymous.
I appreciate the beautiful pictures as well as letters.
I was disappointed with this book because it gave a description of some of the exterior aspects of Carthusian life and said very little about the interior life of growth in the Spirit.
