Have you ever gone to a dinner party and had the same drinks at each friends place? Their drinks taste great, but they're all pretty much the same...a bit of juice mixed with alcohol; everyone gets a drink, but nobody is gushing about the experience. Drinks are typically the opener for a dinner with friends...and we should make it special, taking a litte time with some make-ahead drinks will really WOW our most cherished human beings!Last year Maggie Hoffman wrote the hit, One Bottle Cocktail, which I picked it up because I like to collect drink recipe books. But when I got it, I was blown away with the simplicity of even the most flavor-complex concoctions in this handy manual. It is the go-to book for my weeknight home bartending and the catalyst for many nights of laughter on the porch.Last week, my preorder of Batch Cocktails: Make-Ahead Pitcher Drinks for Every Occasion arrived, and upon opening it, I knew that this book would contain the kick-off drink for a dinner party we were hosting. We settled on Birds and the Bees Punch, which my wife liked from what she imagined it would taste like, and I liked it because I knew I could pair it with the tapas I was making. Using matcha green tea, I got the drink to an intense green, and when the honey and lemon (I used Meyer Lemons) hit the glass, it added a warmth to the drink. Cucumber juice dialed back the tart of the lemon juice, and it balance perfectly when the white rum was added. I was able to make the batch hours before our guests arrived, leaving me time to socialize with them when they arrived before I had to be active in the kitchen for the dinner. They all asked about the drink, loved its complexity....and they all wanted the recipe. I told them where to find it, and they are all getting this book. You should too!Maggie Hoffman writes about beer, wine, and cocktails for this little site called Serious Eats (she is the editor for the Dinks section) and you need to go there now if you have not heard about SE before, it will change the way you cook and eat.
Maggie Hoffman does not disappoint! I am a huge fan of her first cocktail book, The One Bottle Cocktail. This second book that details making cocktails for a crowd is just as much fun. The recipes are easy to follow and the photographs are beautiful and inspiring. Become the life of the party, the host with the most and/or the guest everyone wants to invite when you mix up and share one of these delectable and unique cocktails! I made the Improved Blood Orange Punch (see photo) for a birthday party last Friday night to rave reviews. I can't wait to make another recipe. There are so many good ones, I just don't know what to choose next!
As a busy working mom who loves entertaining, pre-making cocktails is right up my alley! No more "beer and wine" parties at my house! I can't wait to wow guests with these fabulous drinks. I also love the little "use it up" tips for special ingredients. Very thoughtful for the author to include that. Oh, and the photos are absolutely beautiful. This would make a fabulous gift for a host/hostess.
Made the improved blood orange punch and wowed my friends and family. For someone zero cocktail making experience, this book makes me feel like a pro!
Maggie Hoffman has a special talent: She's brilliant when it comes to capturing the ingenuity of some of the world's best bartenders, then translating them into recipes and creations that are easily approachable to the average home entertainer. She understands that while pro bartenders might be in their element making cocktails with a jigger of olive oil-washed gin and a dash of verjus, everyday entertainers want to know what they can do with 2 cups of vodka and and some leftover Aperol. Having people over can be stressful (ever tried to hand-squeeze 10 margaritas?) but I'm looking forward to trying it in a lower-stress way with this book. First on my list? The "Happiness" batch cocktail, made with sweet vermouth, bourbon, Angostura bitters, and orange twists—all things I already have in my pantry.
What a beautiful book with a creative selection of drinks specifically designed for entertaining. I had a couple of these drinks including the bitter ex and bone yard at a bar featuring the book. I decided to buy it as a wedding gift for my friends Matt and Maggie—so happy for them.
